A study done by Kaiser Permanente researchers suggest that women diagnosed with early-stage bre*st cancer who eat full-fat dairy products after diagnosis are more likely to die from bre*st cancer that women who eat low-fat dairy products after diagnosis.
This suggests that low-fat dairy product may b e a better choice for women who’ve been diagnosed with bre*st cancer, especially hormone-receptor-positive bre*st cancer.
In this study, the researches wanted to know if eating full-fat dairy products increased the risk od bre*st cancer recurrence (the cancer coming back), as well as the risk od dying from bre*st cancer.
For this study, full-fat dairy products included:
- Whole milk
- Condensed or evaporated milk
- Pudding
- Ice-cream
- Custard
- Flan
- Cheese
- Yogurt
Butter The women were followed for about 12 years. The researchers found that who reported eating one or more serving per day of full-fat dairy products had a 64% higher risk of dying from any cause and a 49% higher risk of dying from bre*st cancer compared to women who ate fewer servings per day of full-fat dairy products or women who ate low-fat dairy products.
While the results of this study are troubling, it’s important to keep several things in mind.
While this study shows an association between full-fat dairy products and worse bre*st cancer outcomes, it doesn’t prove the first causes the second. Much more research is needed on the potential link between full-fat dairy products and bre*st cancer.
If you’ve been diagnosed with early-stage bre*st cancer, it makes sense to do everything you can to minimize your risk of recurrence and improve your chances of survival, including:
- Eating a healthy diet that’s low in processed foods and sugar
- Avoiding alcohol
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Exercising daily
- Not smoking
Staying on track with any medicines you’re taking to reduce the risk of recurrence.
